John Krasinski Hits You In The Feels - A Quiet Place Review

A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place is a thriller movie directed by John Krasinski who also writes the screen play and plays the lead role alongside his real life wife Emily Blunt; together with amazing child actors; Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. Here's the official synopsis of A Quiet Place:

If they hear you, they hunt you.

Yup, that's pretty much it. To give you a heads up, the movie sets in the near future where Earth has been invaded by creatures that would literally abolish anything that makes sound.

Right off the top, this movie is freaking amazing. It delivers everything that I've expected since the trailer released last year. Have you ever imagine a movie where silence:- is the majority of it, and the first verbal dialogue is uttered 40 minutes in?

And that's a credit to John Krasinski, who did an amazing job directing this film being this is only his third film he ever directed. Apparently comedians-turn-to-directing-horror-mainstream-good-low-budget-film is a thing right now; like Jordan Peele who directed Get Out (2017). And I'm ALL for that. Having watched the film for the second time, I've realized how brilliantly directed this movie is. Mostly every conversation focuses on the character's facial expressions, body language and sign language:- which is challenging enough for a filmmaker to communicate with his audience. Even the scene about the creatures is not about the creatures, its about the characters.

Another thing I like about this movie is that it sets in day 89, not at day 1 where the 'apocalypse' already long started. It would be a much drastically different movie if it were told that way. We now can see the family already figure things out, and makes smart decisions; for the most part at least. Similar to the film Signs (2002), its a story about one family. We only learn what they learn. There are other people in this world, its just they can't go out that much due to the fact they can't make any sound or the monsters will kill them. The fact that it takes place later in the timeline, gives the movie much more credibility because now, we have to assume they've learn things here and there on how to survive from these creatures.

We can nitpick things here and there like, for one thing they don't explain how they get electricity, because I'm pretty sure they gonna make a whole lot of noise if they use the generator. Some character's decisions are confusing and some unanswered questions like. how that this family gets endless supplies of food, military grade ammunition and etc. But I think if you over analyzing this movie then you would be missing the point.

This is a simple good suspense thriller with some really good scare and it knows that and it didn't try too hard to be more. Mainly because the director really knows what the film needs in order to heighten the power and attention to each scene. Emily Blunt has a great chemistry with John, and the kids actors are good too; given that the eldest daughter is actually deaf in real life so she gives out a very authentic performance which I am sure you will appreciate. Honestly, this film gives me a good classic suspense thriller that I crave for since the 'good Japanese horror movies era' like Ju-On (2002) and Dark Water (2002).
